A new LED backlight from the HMI Division of Diamond Electronics, represents a breakthrough in its ability to generate seven clear colours.

Developed by the Winstar Display Company for their WG12864A Series industrystandard, 128 x 64-dot Liquid Crystal Display, this innovative backlight uses Red, Green and Blue LED's in various combinations to generate seven colours. It can therefore provide a clear visual indication of the current state of equipment or a process where, for example, Green denotes normal conditions; Amber indicates that user intervention is required; and Red warns of a problem.

This style of visual indication provides users quick and unambiguous status information which is discernible from a distance. It is therefore ideally suited to applications typically in Security, Machine Control, Industrial Automation, Instrumentation, and Domestic Equipment.

In the WG12864A-Series LCD, developers are provided with the flexibility to display text and symbols of their choice, together with the variety of backlight colours that allows the design to match existing products and corporate identity. The RGB channels are driven independently via their own pins on the LCD's base PCB, each requiring a typical 60mA, while the LCD itself is available in Grey STN Positive and FSTN Positive formats, both with negative voltage generated onboard. And with its integral, industry-standard controller, the display may be incorporated into the host equipment quickly, simply and cost effectively.
